The best part of my job (by far) is getting to interact with some of the smartest, most resourceful people in the world. Working with project and program managers exposes you to the people who make the world go around.
Last week I was in Manhattan with the NYC PMI chapter for their Professional Development Day. At this point, I’ve spoken at a majority of the PMI chapters around the world, but somehow I had never been able to sync my schedule with the NYC chapter, so this was long overdue for me, and what a great event it was! This particular one was very well run, and I finally got the opportunity to meet Leroy J. Ward from ESI who was gracious enough to speak with me minutes before his lunchtime keynote on a survey he had conducted on PMOs.
Today I am in San Jose, Costa Rica for APCON, which is put on by the local PMI Chapter and the Civil Engineers. It’s a surprisingly large conference that draws people from all around Latin America.
And the one thing I am reminded of is that project management is highly similar, no matter where you are and no matter what you do. Last week I was talking to a group that was largely I.T. This week it is mostly engineers, but the struggles and triumphs are consistently similar. It’s all about getting better at planning, executing, and control. Ultimately it comes down to getting better at getting better.
If you happen to be here at APCON, please make it a point to seek me out and say hello!
