The Exam is Changing

Home The Savvy PM Blog The Exam is Changing

I’ve had 2 Students in the last week ask about changes to the PMP® exam scheduled for February.  There are none!

The PgMP® is changing…not the PMP.  The PgMP is the Program Management Professional certification, and it is not the same as the PMP, Project Management Professional.  Unfortunately, PMI generated confusion by appending announcements about the PgMP change to some communications.  I hope this post helps!

I’ll include an actual example below.  This individual failed the PMP and received this message from PMI.  (I removed the name; all other elements are unchanged.)

From: Project Management Institute
Subject: Notification about your recent examination

Dear (changed name to protect the innocent),

Thank you for your interest in the PMP® Credential. While you did not pass the examination, you are eligible to test again. Not everyone passes the examination the first time, which is why our policy provides three opportunities to test within your one-year eligibility period.

If you would like to sit for the exam again, follow these steps:

  • Please log in at https://certification.pmi.org/ so that you may select how you will be testing (computer-based or paper-based) and submit payment for your reexamination.
  • Visit the Exam Prep page for your exam accessed through each individual credential page on PMI.org for tips on how you can prepare for the exam.

You also will find full details for the reexamination process in the handbook.

REMINDER ABOUT IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THE PgMP® EXAM:

Please keep the following dates in mind when scheduling your reexamination. 20 January 2012 will be the final day to take the PgMP exam in its current structure. The PgMP exam will be updated as of 1 February 2012 as a result of the Role Delination Study.

Beginning 1 February, candidates who take the exam will not receive an exam report until approximately the end of May. This delay is necessary any time an exam changes to validate the new examination structure.

For more information, visit the PgMP Update page on PMI.org.

PMI wishes you a successful testing experience.
